Our goal is to ensure that every child's early dental experiences lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy teeth. If you're unsure about how to help your child establish good dental habits, our welcoming team is ready to assist you! Keep reading for some tips to help your children maintain excellent oral health.

Begin Dental Care Early

Some may believe that since baby teeth will eventually fall out and be replaced by adult teeth, routine dental care isn't necessary. However, taking care of your child's baby teeth is crucial for helping them develop proper speech patterns, learn how to eat, and ensure the health of their adult teeth.

While it's recommended that children visit the dentist around the age of one, you can start introducing them to regular dental hygiene even before that. For infants, gently wipe their gums after meals with a warm, damp washcloth or soft gum brush. Once their first tooth emerges, you can begin brushing with a baby toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. Start flossing when two teeth are in contact.

Regular Dental Visits

A healthy dental routine includes biannual visits to the dentist. Once your child reaches one year of age, bring them to Southbridge Dental Care every six months. We will address all your dental health questions related to each stage of childhood, help your children embrace dental care, and alleviate any dental anxiety they may have.

Lead by Example

Your child looks up to you; by demonstrating excellent oral hygiene practices, you can encourage them to adopt good oral care habits too. Show your child the correct brushing and flossing techniques. Young children typically need help with brushing and flossing until around age six, and older children may still require supervision until adolescence.

Consistency Is Crucial

Habits become ingrained when practiced daily and at consistent times. Ensure your entire family sticks to a routine of brushing in the morning and before bed, and flossing at least once daily. After brushing before bed, limit consumption to water only and postpone milk or sugary drinks until the morning.
